Whether you’re remodeling or building a new home, trends come and go each year. Here are 4 trends to keep an eye on for 2015.

 Green

More than ever, homes built this year and for years to come will be built with energy-efficiency in mind. There are many ways to create a “green” home – appliances, windows, insulation, solar panels, and even geothermal heating or cooling solutions.

Smart

As technological and automated home solutions become more affordable and available to the public, homebuilders are including these items in their new homes. From centralized audio and video throughout the house to WiFi-enabled floor heating systems.

Great room

Moving away from the traditional living room, more homes are being built with one “great room” that encompasses a living room, family room and kitchen. These “great rooms” are spaces for the entire family to spend time – watching TV, working or eating – all together. These rooms are great for bringing the family together and hosting or having large groups of people over.

Smaller

According to The Plan Collection, “The ‘forever’ home average size is expected to be in the 2,300 – 2,500 square-foot range.” Americans now want homes that are easier to maintain, while still being useful for their particular lifestyle. This has inspired creative, unique and personal solutions and design choices that lead to a home that works for a family through many different stages of life.
