Deadline To Verify Homestead Deductions: January 1, 2013
House Enrolled Act 13442009 requires taxpayers who receive the standard homestead deduction to verify that they are eligible to receive the benefit and to provide additional identifying information. A pink verification form was previously sent with tax bills for 2010, 2011, and 2012. This form must be completed at least once and received by the county auditor by January 1, 2013 in order to make sure that the taxpayer will continue to have the standard homestead deduction applied and receive the benefit of the 1 percent tax cap. Without the standard homestead deduction, the tax cap would be 2 percent and would increase the property tax liability. Homeowners who are unsure if they have met the verification should contact their county auditor office.
